Exercise Six: Population Dynamics

  General Description

Important stuff happens when many neurons coordinate their activity. Bad stuff happens when this coordination becomes dysfunctional. The dynamics of population-level neuronal activity in the brain is, very generally speaking, a function of how excitatory and inhibitory neurons talk to each other. Below, you can watch the consequences of modifying connections among excitatory and inhibitory neurons. At the bottom of the simulation, you keep track of neuronal activity with a raster plot wherein blue and red tick marks represent action potentials generated by excitatory and inhibitory neurons, respectively.

Place the crosshairs on a neuron and click to activate a single neuron. This activation then recruits activity in the population of neurons. The extent of such recruitment is defined by several things, including synaptic strength and connectivity.
